Veteran Home Care

Home care the VA can pay for directly

This office is credentialed through VA Community Care and accepts authorized VA referrals, so approved Homemaker and Home Health Aide hours are paid by the VA rather than by the family. We will also tell you which of the three VA routes fits and complete our part of the forms.

What a caregiver does

  • Homemaker and Home Health Aide hours, where the VA has approved them
  • Respite care for a family caregiver
  • Help understanding Aid and Attendance, which pays the household instead
  • Our part of the paperwork, completed and handed to you
  • Rides to VA appointments

Who this suits

Veterans enrolled in VA health care, and surviving spouses who may qualify for a pension benefit nobody has told them about.

Three routes, and they are not interchangeable

Families are routinely told no by somebody describing a different program. Homemaker and Home Health Aide and respite care both sit inside VA health care and are arranged through the VA. Aid and Attendance is a pension benefit, paid to the household, which the household then spends on care from any provider it likes.

Knowing which one applies changes everything about what you do next, and it is the single most useful thing we can tell you on a first phone call.

What being credentialed actually means

This office is credentialed through VA Community Care and accepts authorized VA referrals. In practice that means where the VA has approved Homemaker and Home Health Aide hours, it pays us directly and the family pays nothing toward those hours.

We are not the VA, we cannot decide eligibility and we cannot speed up a decision. What we can do is tell you which route fits, what evidence the VA will ask for, and fill in our part of the paperwork and hand it to you completed.

Surviving spouses

Aid and Attendance is available to surviving spouses of wartime veterans as well as to veterans themselves, and it is the benefit families are least likely to have heard of. There are income and net-worth limits. It is worth asking about even if you think you will not qualify.

The practical bits

  • Minimum four hours per visit, with no minimum number of days a week.
  • Care usually starts within 24 hours.
  • A written plan with the hours, the tasks and the weekly cost before anything begins. See how it works.
  • Nurse-owned, and licensed by the Georgia Department of Community Health as a Private Home Care Provider, permit PHCP010959.

Not sure what your parent actually needs?

That is the normal starting point. Describe the week and a care manager will tell you what would actually help, including if that is less than you think.

Straight answers

Veteran Home Care: common questions

Does the VA pay you directly?

For approved Homemaker and Home Health Aide hours, yes. This office is credentialed through VA Community Care and accepts authorized referrals, so those hours are billed to the VA rather than to the family.

What if we are not enrolled in VA health care?

Then the health-care routes are not open yet, but Aid and Attendance may be, because it is a pension benefit rather than part of VA health care. Tell us the service history on the first call and we will say which is worth pursuing.

How long does VA approval take?

The VA decides and the VA sets the pace; anyone who promises you a timeline is guessing. What we can do is make sure the paperwork leaving your hands is complete, which is where most delays actually come from.
