Personal Care

Personal care at home in Atlanta. Help with bathing, dressing and getting around safely.

This is the hands-on part of home care, and usually the hardest thing for a family to take on themselves. A caregiver helps with the parts of the day that have become difficult or risky, and does it in a way that keeps someone's dignity intact.

What a caregiver does

  • Bathing and showering, including help in and out of the tub
  • Dressing, grooming and shaving
  • Toileting and continence care
  • Transfers in and out of a bed, chair or car, without a fall
  • Medication reminders on schedule

Who this suits

Someone who is steady enough to stay at home but no longer safe doing all of this alone, or a family doing it themselves and finding it is too much.

When families start asking about personal care

Almost nobody calls about personal care first. They call about the housework, or the driving, and somewhere in that conversation it comes out that showering has become frightening, or that a daughter has been helping her father dress for eight months and neither of them wants to talk about it.

That delay is normal and it is also the risk. Bathrooms are where falls happen: wet tile, a low toilet, a tub wall that was easy to step over five years ago. A caregiver who is there for the shower is there for the part of the day with the highest chance of an ambulance.

How we keep it dignified

The care plan is written by Glenda Lewis, RN, who assesses what help is genuinely needed rather than defaulting to the maximum. Plenty of clients need standby help and a steadying hand, not someone doing it for them, and writing that down is what stops a caregiver over-helping.

Where we can, the same caregiver comes each time. Personal care is the one service where continuity is not a nicety: nobody wants to be undressed in front of a rota of strangers, and resistance usually drops once there is one familiar person.

What personal care does not include

This is non-medical care under our Georgia Private Home Care Provider permit. A caregiver can remind someone to take medication but cannot administer it, and cannot give injections, change a wound dressing or carry out any task Georgia reserves for a licensed clinician. If that is what is needed, say so on the first call and we will point you to the right kind of provider rather than take the work.

The practical bits

  • Minimum four hours per visit, with no minimum number of days a week.
  • Care usually starts within 24 hours.
  • A written plan with the hours, the tasks and the weekly cost before anything begins. See how it works.
  • Nurse-owned, and licensed by the Georgia Department of Community Health as a Private Home Care Provider, permit PHCP010959.

Not sure what your parent actually needs?

That is the normal starting point. Describe the week and a care manager will tell you what would actually help, including if that is less than you think.

Personal Care: common questions

Can we have the same caregiver every time?

Continuity of care is always our goal. We understand the importance of building trust and familiarity with the same care team day in and day out. When someone is unavailable, our 24/7 care coordination team arranges coverage to ensure continuity of care.

My mother says she does not want caregivers. What then?

This is very common, and we completely understand. Accepting help at home can feel like a loss of independence. It’s natural for there to be some resistance early in the process, but as trust and familiarity grow, many clients come to look forward to seeing their caregivers. Our care management team works with families to find an approach that respects her wishes while keeping her safe.

How do we get started?

It starts with a conversation. We’ll learn about your loved one’s needs, routines, and preferences, then schedule an in-home assessment. Using what we learn, along with any recommendations from healthcare providers, our care management team develops an individualized Plan of Care and matches your loved one with a caregiver suited to their needs and personality.
